This place also known as Royal was built by order of Henry IV in 1609 and was the first in Paris. Around 36 houses perfectly symmetrical and equal between them (except one which places the entrance to the plaza below it).
The avenue of the Champs Elysees, with a length close to 1900 m, ranging from the Place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe and is one of the major arteries of Paris.
In its path are large number of hotels, restaurants and shops. Nearby, on Rue Saint Honore, is the Palis lÉlysée of residence of the president of the republic.
At present there are no remaining traces of the prison assault which marked the beginning of the revolution in 1789.
At the center of the square stands the Column of July, which was inaugurated in 1840 in honor of revolutionaries killed in the uprising against the monarchy.
