After the battle of Austerlitz in 1805 Napoleon promised his troops would come home under triumphal arches. The Arc de Triomphe is the realization of its promise.
Has dimensions of 49 meters high by 45 wide, and its design is inspired by Roman architecture. Entire surface is covered with reliefs among which are the statues of the outer face of each of the pillars which represent the triumph of Napoleon, the departure of volunteers to defend the nation in 1792, Peace and Marseille .
At the foot of the arch is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that pays tribute to the soldiers who died in wartime without having been identified.
From the twelve avenues radiating an arc of which is the Champs Elysees leading to the Place de la Concorde.
